Willem Geubbels and AS Monaco will probably go their separate ways after three years. According to a report by L'Equipe, head coach Nico Kovac no longer plans with the 19-year-old left winger, whose contract runs until 2023. In the previous season, the teenager was only used sporadically in the first half of the season, a metatarsal fracture at the beginning of the year allowed only two short appearances at the end of the season.
The Geubbels once switched to the Cote d’Azur with the greatest advance praise. Monaco transferred 20 million euros in summer 2018 for the offensive jewel to Olympique Lyon. Even then, according to reports, OL wanted to sell the youngster to Germany rather than to a league rival, so great was the confidence in the skills of the young offensive player.
But Lyon's worries were unfounded. The lightning-fast winger slowed down injuries again and again. The right-footed player almost completely missed the 2018/19 season. A necessary knee operation forced the French U18 international to watch for nine months. In the end, after three years in Monaco, there are only 17 competitive games and one goal for the professionals.
Accordingly, Monaco wants to draw a line and move Geubbels into new fields in search of more gaming practice. According to L’Equipe, "several top clubs" from the Bundesliga have the tempo dribbler on their radar. Clubs from the Premier League as well as from Belgium Royal Antwerp and RSC Anderlecht are also in the raffle.
One thing is clear: after three complicated years in Monaco, the once exceptional talent is missing several truckloads of match practice. In a fit state, however, Geubbels can help almost every Bundesliga club with his tremendous potential.
