AFCON 2025: Egypt and Nigeria reschedule friendly match

Published on: 07 December 2025

The international friendly between Egypt and Nigeria has been rescheduled to take place on Tuesday, December 16, instead of the original date of Sunday, December 14, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.

The match, which is a crucial warm-up for both teams ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), will now be played at the Cairo International Stadium.

The decision to postpone the match was made following FIFA's announcement that clubs are only required to release players for the AFCON on December 15, a week before the tournament kicks off.

This has disrupted the plans of many participating countries, including Egypt and Nigeria, who will now have limited time to prepare for the tournament.

Egypt's head coach, Hossam Hassan, has already announced a 28-man preliminary squad, and the team will use this friendly match to fine-tune their tactics and assess player readiness ahead of the AFCON.

The AFCON 2025 finals will take place in Morocco from December 21 to January 18, 2026, with Egypt in Group B alongside South Africa, Angola, and Zimbabwe, while Nigeria is in Group C with Tunisia, Uganda, and Tanzania.
