Karl-Heinz Riedle: Gotze Has Not 'Forgotten' How to Play Football

Published on: 22 July 2016

"?Ex-Borussia Dortmund star Karl-Heinz Riedle has backed new Dortmund signing Mario Gotze to succeed on his return to his former club.

Gotze moved back to BVB on Thursday after a three-year spell with German rivals Bayern Munich, having made 73 Bundesliga appearances for Bayern, scoring 22 goals, but couldn't secure a regular starting position, falling behind the likes of Arjen Robben, Thomas Muller, Franck Ribery, and more recently Douglas Costa and Kingsley Coman.

Whilst his move to Munich was unsuccessful for Gotze on a personal level, he still won three consecutive Bundesliga titles, two DFB-Pokal's, a UEFA Super Cup and a FIFA World Club Cup.

And Riedle is convinced that the 24-year-old will be a success on his return to Dortmund.

"Gotze is a brilliant player," "?Riedle told Bild.

"It is important for him to have returned to the BVB family and to be back home. He will not have forgotten how to play football.

"I don't think he was as bad as some made him out to be at Euro 2016 in France."

Riedle, who made 87 Bundesliga appearances and scored 24 goals for the club, also spoke of how Thomas Tuchel will be important in Gotze's growth over the next chapter of his career.

"It's not like he is a player who has hit rock bottom. Thomas Tuchel will just have to get a few things right", he continued.

"We have all seen last year with Henrikh Mkhitaryan what he can do with a player."

Mkhitaryan has since left Dortmund for Manchester United, paving the way for Gotze to return to his former club.

Dortmund have recruited well since losing Mkhitaryan, star defender Mats Hummels and midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, with Ousmane Dembele, Marc Bartra and Andre Schurrle among their ten summer signings.
