From Liverpool.com, Liverpool know that there is limited time left in the transfer window, and yet Xherdan Shaqiri is still at the club. The one player who has openly said he wants to leave Anfield, it was assumed that a move would be sorted with relative ease: Lazio and Napoli had both been credited with an interest, and a classy Euro 2020 campaign cannot have failed to remind potential suitors of his quality. Lyon has emerged as the most likely destination, but the clubs are still yet to reach an agreement.

‘Swap deals’ are very rarely recorded as such: if Liverpool decided to make a move for Cornet in part-exchange for Shaqiri, both clubs could log the full transfer fee on the books, with the cost of the player coming the other way amortised over the length of their contract. This would certainly help smooth the path for a move, essentially providing Lyon with the money needed to pay for Shaqiri.

Of course, this would only be worthwhile if Cornet is adjudged to be a player that can add something to Jürgen Klopp’s squad. While Liverpool would not normally be competing with Burnley for signings, ‘squad’ is the key word: the Ivory Coast international would be able to provide some extremely flexible depth to supplement the existing core of players at Anfield.
