AC Milan are expected to return for Sporting defender Goncalo Inacio in January, with the Portugal international reportedly willing to wait for the chance to reunite with former manager Ruben Amorim.
Inacio was strongly linked with a move to AC Milan during the summer transfer window, but the proposed switch did not materialise. The 25-year-old ultimately stayed in Lisbon, while the Italian club chose to retain Fikayo Tomori and delay a move for the Sporting defender.
That decision has not ended AC Milan’s interest. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano and Tuttomercatoweb, the club intend to revisit the possibility of signing Inacio when the transfer window reopens in January.
Inacio is said to remain keen on moving to San Siro and would reportedly be happy to wait until the winter window for the opportunity to work with Amorim again. The pair previously worked together at Sporting, where Amorim was in charge before later taking over at Manchester United.
Amorim has since become AC Milan’s manager, replacing Max Allegri after Allegri was sacked for failing to qualify for the Champions League. His appointment has increased the possibility of a reunion with Inacio, although a deal could not be completed during the summer.
AC Milan’s decision to keep Tomori meant the club did not proceed with the move at that stage. Instead, they opted to bide their time before potentially making another approach for Inacio, who remains under consideration as a defensive target.
The January transfer window could therefore provide the next opportunity for AC Milan to pursue the deal. Romano and Tuttomercatoweb’s reports indicate that the club’s interest has been maintained despite the summer setback, while Inacio’s reported willingness to wait leaves the possibility of an agreement open.
For now, the defender remains with Sporting in Lisbon. However, AC Milan’s expected return and Amorim’s presence at the club mean the prospect of Inacio joining the Italian side has not gone away.
