Ghana consider five candidates to replace Carlos Queiroz after poor start

Ghana are searching for a new head coach after parting company with Carlos Queiroz only a few months into his tenure.

The Black Stars lost their opening two matches in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, including a 2-0 defeat by Cote d’Ivoire and a 4-2 home loss to The Gambia. They now need a replacement before facing Somalia twice in November.

Once one of Africa’s leading national teams, Ghana are at risk of missing a second successive Africa Cup of Nations after failing to qualify for the 2025 tournament. Several experienced coaches currently without a club could be considered.

Walid Regragui

Walid Regragui would be the most high-profile option. The 50-year-old has been without a team since leaving Morocco, although he joined Canal+ as a consultant in September, working on European and Premier League coverage.

Regragui’s knowledge of African football, combined with Morocco’s historic run to the 2022 World Cup semi-finals, would give him considerable stature for a Ghana side in need of rebuilding. Whether he would be interested in taking on another African project remains unclear.

Patrice Beaumelle

Patrice Beaumelle has extensive experience across the continent, having worked in Zambia, Cote d’Ivoire, Morocco, Algeria, Angola and Tunisia.

The Frenchman was Herve Renard’s assistant when Zambia won the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations and Cote d’Ivoire lifted the trophy in 2015. He later managed Zambia and Cote d’Ivoire himself.

Beaumelle won the Algerian league with MC Alger in 2024 before spells in Angola and at Esperance de Tunis. He has been available since leaving the Tunisian club in May and would bring an immediate understanding of the demands of African football.

Marc Brys

Marc Brys’ time with Cameroon was dominated by a public institutional dispute involving the Ministry of Sports, Samuel Eto’o and the Federation Camerounaise de Football (Fecafoot).

The Belgian’s tenure was turbulent, but it also exposed him to the intense scrutiny surrounding a major African national team. His name had already been linked with the Ghana job in April. Although his club career has largely been away from the highest level, his experience could appeal to a Ghana team seeking greater authority and stability.

Tom Saintfiet

Tom Saintfiet is another established figure in African international football. He is best known for guiding The Gambia to the quarter-finals of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

Saintfiet has been available since leaving Mali in April. His name was also mentioned for the Ghana position after Otto Addo’s departure, although Ghanaian media reported that no concrete contact took place.

He may lack the profile of Regragui, but he has a record of building competitive teams in difficult circumstances.

Pape Thiaw

Pape Thiaw, who led Senegal to victory at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, was dismissed after the Lions were eliminated in the round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup.

His situation is complicated by an ongoing dispute with the Federation Senegalaise de Football. Thiaw is seeking more than 423 million FCFA in unpaid salaries, bonuses and contractual benefits.

At 45, his recent continental success and knowledge of West African football could still make him an attractive choice.

Whoever is appointed will inherit a major challenge. Ghana have two defeats and no points in the qualifiers and face Somalia twice in November. The next coach must rebuild the team while delivering results immediately.
