Johor Bahru: Ulisses Morais has replaced Benjamin Mora as the head coach of Malaysian powerhouse Johor Darul Ta’zim.
The 2015 AFC Cup champions were knocked out of this year’s edition at the ASEAN Zonal Semi-final stage after losing to Philippines side Ceres Negros on away goals in May.
Morais, who has previously coached Portugal clubs Naval, SC Beira-Mar, Aves and most recently Famalicao, will now look to lead the Southern Tigers to what would be a fourth successive Malaysia Super League crown.
The 57-year-old Portuguese coach met the team during a training session on Monday.
Currently leading the standings with 30 points after 13 matches, JDT are set to face Penang when the league resumes on July 1. Three days later, they will kick-off their Malaysia Cup campaign with Selangor, Sarawak and Terengganu their opposition in Group D.
“We would like to wish Ulisses Morais a warm welcome to Johor and we hope that with the experience under his belt, he will be able to take JDT to greater heights,” the club announced on its official website.
Former head coach Mora will resume his original role as head coach of JDT II, who play in Malaysia’s second division - the Malaysia Premier League.
“We would like to thank Benjamin Mora for his continuous service, hard work and dedication. He is a young coach with much potential and we are confident he will be an even better coach in the future.”
