London will host this year’s Ballon d’Or ceremony in October, but the Kopa Trophy will also attract significant attention, with Ayyoub Bouaddi, Ibrahim Maza and Yan Diomande included among the 10 nominees for the award recognising the world’s best under-21 player.
The trio are not considered to have the same chances of winning as the overwhelming favourite, Lamine Yamal. However, their presence on the shortlist underlines the quality emerging from Africa and the growing influence of a new generation on the highest level of European football.
At 18, Bouaddi has experienced the most dramatic rise in status in recent months.
The midfielder produced an impressive World Cup campaign with Morocco, who reached the quarter-finals, before leaving Lille for Manchester City in a deal worth about 100 million euros. The size of the transfer represents a major investment in a player of his age and another indication of the esteem in which he is held across Europe.
Bouaddi has played only two league matches since completing his move and faces strong competition for a place in midfield, particularly from Enzo Fernandez. Nevertheless, his technical ability and striking maturity have already earned widespread approval.
Bacary Sagna, the former Manchester City player and France international, believes Bouaddi has the potential “to one day reach the level of Rodri or Sergio Busquets”. Sagna has particularly highlighted the teenager’s composure and intelligence in possession.
Maza’s progress has attracted less attention in the media, but his development has been equally impressive.
The Algeria attacking midfielder has made a successful step up with Bayer Leverkusen. Following a strong first season, the Fennec has also made a positive start to the new campaign, reinforcing the view that he has the qualities to establish himself among Europe’s leading players in his position.
Like Bouaddi, Maza attracted interest from Manchester City earlier in the season.
Technically gifted and creative, with the ability to operate between the lines, Maza is now regarded as one of the leading prospects in Algerian football. He is also considered one of the most promising young African midfielders of his generation.
For Diomande, the summer brought an equally significant change in status when he moved to Real Madrid.
The Ivory Coast international’s start in Spain has been quieter. He has not yet been given a sustained opportunity to establish himself as a regular starter and must adjust to an environment where competition for places is intense.
However, his breakthrough at Leipzig and subsequent transfer to Madrid demonstrate the potential that Europe’s biggest clubs believe he possesses.
Bouaddi, Maza and Diomande have followed three markedly different routes to the Kopa shortlist. Their simultaneous nominations nevertheless carry considerable symbolic importance.
Aged 18, 20 and 19 respectively, the three players could form part of the Morocco, Algeria and Ivory Coast national teams for the next decade. Their inclusion also provides a snapshot of the depth of young talent developing across the African game, even as Yamal enters the ceremony as the clear favourite.
