Aston Villa have signed central defender Taylor Harwood-Bellis from Southampton on a long-term contract, with the club confirming the transfer on their official website.
The 24-year-old joins the Birmingham side after a productive season in the Championship, where he made 41 appearances for Southampton. Harwood-Bellis scored seven goals and provided three assists during the campaign.
The transfer brings the defender back to the Premier League setup after his spell with Southampton and represents a return to the club environment in which he began his football development. Harwood-Bellis came through the academy at Manchester City before establishing himself as a senior player elsewhere.
Aston Villa did not disclose the financial terms of the deal in their announcement. However, reports have suggested that Southampton received 35m euros for the defender.
Harwood-Bellis has now committed his future to Aston Villa through a long-term employment contract. The club’s confirmation formally completes his move from Southampton and adds another central defensive option to the Birmingham squad.
His attacking contribution from defence was a notable feature of his most recent season. Across his 41 Championship matches, he found the net seven times and created three goals for team-mates, figures that underline his influence beyond his primary defensive responsibilities.
The move is the latest piece of transfer business announced by Aston Villa. The club previously confirmed the arrival of 18-year-old winger Ibrahima Mbaye from Paris Saint-Germain.
Mbaye’s transfer and Harwood-Bellis’ signing have both been announced by Aston Villa, with the defender’s arrival following his 41-match Championship campaign for Southampton. The club’s latest addition is also a product of the Manchester City system, having developed at the academy before moving on in his career.
For Southampton, the reported 35m-euro fee would represent the financial return from the departure of a player who made a substantial contribution last season. For Aston Villa, the agreement secures the services of a defender who contributed seven goals and three assists in the Championship and has signed a long-term deal with the club.
