Stade Rennais return to European competition on Wednesday evening when they face Sturm Graz at the Merkur Arena in Graz, with the match kicking off at 19:00.
The Austrian side enter the Europa League after being eliminated by Fenerbahce in the Champions League qualifying rounds. They will look to use home advantage to make a strong start to their continental campaign, with the support of their own supporters expected to play an important role.
Rennes arrive in Austria in encouraging form. Franck Haise’s side remain unbeaten in Ligue 1 after three victories and a draw against PSG, and have developed a strong tactical structure during the opening stages of the season.
The Breton club will travel with a full squad and will aim to impose their style from the start. Their current run has given them confidence, but Sturm Graz present a test in a competition in which the opening matches can quickly shape the direction of a campaign.
Sturm Graz are known for their committed approach, although they have at times appeared vulnerable defensively away from home. Rennes will therefore need to convert their opportunities if they are to avoid being caught out in what could prove a difficult opening fixture.
The meeting at the Merkur Arena will be the first official match between the two clubs. Both sides will be seeking to begin the first round with a positive result, making Wednesday’s contest an important early test for Rennes and Sturm Graz.
