After heavy gunfire erupted outside the presidential palace in Conakry on Sunday, mutinous soldiers commanded by the former leader of Guinea's special forces unit seized President Alpha Conde. Conde was photographed looking unkempt and in military detention. The junta's leaders declared the dissolution of the government as well.

Soldiers toppled the government and took control in a coup the day before Guinea's national team was scheduled to play a World Cup qualifier in the capital Conakry, trapping overseas-based players in the country.

Liverpool stated it was in "continuous communication" with midfielder Naby Keita and that he was "safe and healthy," while other teams checked on their own players' well-being. Players were unable to leave Guinea after borders were blocked, therefore several members of the squad remained in the team hotel in Conakry.

Liverpool stated it was in contact with "relevant authorities" about Keita, including Guinea team officials, and was attempting to return him "to Liverpool in a timely and secure way."
