Last season, Van de Beek only started four Premier League games, and he has yet to play a minute this season.

Van van Beek discussed his time at Manchester United thus far in an exclusive conversation with Rio Ferdinand's Five.

Van de Beek said: “It’s not easy if you are playing, also not for the confidence and everything.

“I train really hard every day. Just wait for your chance, that’s the only thing I can do. If the moment is there I have to be ready.”

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been quite complimentary of Van de Beek behind the scenes, according to Van de Beek.

The Dutchman explained: “He (Solskjaer) said ‘What I see everyday in training, I see a different Donny now.’

“He was really positive about me, and I’m feeling well, I’m in good shape so I hope I can show the people that I’ve improved a lot now.”

Van de Beek admitted that he is disappointed by his lack of playing time, as any aspiring footballer would be, but he plans to stay optimistic. “I think you need to be connected with the squad, and of course, every player feels upset at times,” he added. If you don't train hard, you're giving the manager a cause to play without you, therefore don't express it (anger) with your demeanor. Always remain optimistic, I believe, is the key.”
