Manchester United fans in plane protest over 'specialist in failure' Ed Woodward

BURNLEY, England -- Manchester United fans have flown a banner over Turf Moor in a protest aimed at Ed Woodward.

A plane carrying the message "Ed Woodward -- a specialist in failure" was displayed ahead of Man United's Premier League clash with Burnley on Sunday.

It is a reference to Jose Mourinho's rebuke of former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger in February 2014 and follows a summer transfer window during which United's executive vice-chairman missed out of key transfer targets, chiefly a new centre-back.

Mourinho has made no secret of his disappointment at seeing the club spend just £68 million to sign Fred, Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant this summer and warned that his team could face a "difficult" season. Defeats to Brighton and Tottenham in their first three games made it United's worst start to a season since 1992.

It is the second time United supporters have clubbed together to launch a mid-air protest.

In March 2014, a banner bearing the message "Wrong one -- Moyes out" was flown over Old Trafford after under-fire manager David Moyes had overseen back-to-back 3-0 home defeats to Liverpool and Manchester City. United beat Aston Villa 4-1 on the day, but Moyes was sacked after just another four games in charge.
