Lyon secured their second win of the Ligue 1 season by beating Auxerre 3-1 at home on Friday, 4 September, leaving the visitors without a point after three matches.
The result moved Lyon on to seven points from their opening three fixtures. They have now recorded two victories and one draw in the current Ligue 1 campaign, while Auxerre’s defeat was their third in succession.
Lyon took control of the contest in the 28th minute when Felix Bacher opened the scoring. Ernest Nuamah provided the assist as the home side established the lead.
The hosts extended their advantage before Auxerre responded. Zachary Athekame found the net after being set up by Lois Openda, putting Lyon 2-0 ahead.
Auxerre did manage to reduce the deficit before half-time. Their goal came in the 42nd minute and ensured Lyon’s lead was cut to one before the interval.
Lyon restored their two-goal advantage eight minutes after the restart. Nuamah, who had already contributed an assist, completed the scoring in the 53rd minute.
There were no further changes to the scoreline, allowing Lyon to see out the match and collect all three points. Auxerre were unable to find another response after Nuamah’s goal, and the final result remained 3-1.
For Lyon, the victory continues a positive beginning to the Ligue 1 season. Seven points from three games places them among the teams to have made a strong start, with their only dropped points coming in a draw.
Auxerre, by contrast, remain without a point after the opening three rounds. Their latest loss followed defeats in their two previous matches, leaving them with three defeats from three games.
The home side’s performance was shaped by the timing of their goals. Bacher’s opener gave Lyon the initiative, Athekame’s strike restored their cushion after Openda’s contribution, and Nuamah’s second-half finish settled the match.
Although Auxerre reduced the margin to 2-1 shortly before the interval, Lyon prevented the visitors from building on that momentum. The hosts’ third goal early in the second half put them back in a commanding position and proved decisive.
With no more goals after the 53rd minute, Lyon completed a 3-1 home victory and strengthened their position after three Ligue 1 fixtures. Auxerre left empty-handed once again and remain at the foot of their early-season points tally.
