Speculation that Liverpool are closing in on the signing of Napoli hitman Gonzalo Higuain has ramped up overnight, as Reds manager Jurgen Klopp was pictured with the player's brother and agent watching the Argentinian play.

"?BeIN Sports reported on Monday that Liverpool are set to sign the former Real Madrid star "very soon" - even after failing to qualify for Europe last season. Higuain had the best campaign of his career playing in Serie A, firing Napoli to second place in the table with a remarkable 36 goals in 35 league appearances.

Higuain featured in his nation's 2-1 win over Chile in the Copa America, and played for 74 minutes before being replaced by Manchester City's Sergio Aguero. The fact that Klopp was spotted leaving the ground just two minutes after Higuain was taken off suggests the German attended the game for one reason only.

The Liverpool boss was stood by the striker's brother and agent, Nicolas Higuain, for the duration of the game and a number of pictures of the German have done the rounds on social media.

Klopp is looking to overhaul his strike force this summer, as Christian Benteke is expected to leave the club just a year after arriving from Aston Villa, while Daniel Sturridge's ongoing injury problems have caused Klopp to consider more reliable options.

One of those appears to be 28-year-old Higuain, who has two years left on his contract at Napoli. The club have confirmed on a number of occasions they will be looking for a huge fee if they are to sell Higuain, though Napoli are also believed to have a replacement in mind even before a sale is completed.

Romelu Lukaku, who plays for Liverpool's local rivals Everton, is thought to be high on their shopping list.
