"Joey Barton has been charged for misconduct in relation to betting," a statement reads on the "?FA's website.

"It is alleged that between 26 March 2006 and 13 May 2016, he placed 1,260 bets on the result, progress, conduct or any other aspect of, or occurrence in, football matches or competitions in breach of FA Rule E8.

"He has until 5 January 2017 to respond to the charge."

The charge completes a whirlwind few months for Barton, whose contract with Scottish side Rangers was terminated with immediate effect in November. The former Newcastle United and Manchester City player had been involved in a training ground altercation with former teammate Andy Halliday following Rangers' 5-1 Old Firm defeat against Celtic earlier this season.

Barton has been training with former club Burnley and will soon resign for the Clarets on a short-term deal, subject to international clearance. It is not yet known whether the move could be in jeopardy due to the betting charge.
