AS Roma and Real Madrid went into half-time level at 1-1 in the UEFA Champions League after an even opening 45 minutes in Rome.
The home side began with purpose and tested Thibaut Courtois several times, with Matias Soule going closest when his effort threatened the Real Madrid goal.
Roma were forced into an early change in the 17th minute when Manu Kone suffered a muscle injury. He was replaced by Niccolo Pisilli.
The hosts’ positive start was rewarded three minutes later. Matias Soule found Marten de Roon, who sent a long-range shot beyond Courtois to put Roma ahead.
Real Madrid responded in the 25th minute following a misplaced clearance by Mario Hermoso near the edge of the penalty area. Kylian Mbappe collected the loose ball and struck towards goal.
His effort took a slight deflection, lifted over the Roma goalkeeper and brought Real Madrid level.
Both sides must now find another decisive moment after the interval, with the tie still finely balanced.
