Real Madrid have taken a 2-0 half-time lead over Inter Milan in Tuesday evening’s UEFA Champions League meeting at Santiago Bernabeu, despite being outplayed for long periods by the Italian side.
Kylian Mbappe put Real Madrid in front after 14 minutes before Federico Valverde added a second nine minutes later. The two goals have given the Spanish side a commanding advantage at the interval in one of the opening round’s headline fixtures.
However, the scoreline does not reflect the balance of play during the first half. Inter Milan enjoyed more possession and looked the more adventurous of the two teams, with the visitors creating a greater volume of attempts.
Inter registered nine shots before the break, compared with four from Real Madrid. Their control of the ball and willingness to attack placed the hosts under pressure, but that dominance was not converted into a goal.
Real Madrid, by contrast, made the most of their opportunities. Mbappe broke the deadlock in the 14th minute, giving the home side an early lead despite Inter’s positive start. Valverde then struck nine minutes later to double the advantage and leave the visitors facing a two-goal deficit.
The two goals mean Real Madrid went into the dressing room in a strong position, even though Inter had produced the more imposing overall performance in possession and in the number of efforts on goal.
For Inter, the first-half display offered evidence of their ability to control the match, but the lack of a goal left them with little reward for their attacking pressure. Their nine attempts were not enough to alter the score, while Real Madrid’s four shots proved significantly more effective.
The result at half-time therefore reflects a contrast between territorial control and finishing. Inter Milan have had the greater share of the game in terms of possession and shooting, while Real Madrid have established a clear lead through Mbappe and Valverde.
With the opening 45 minutes complete, Real Madrid hold a 2-0 advantage at Santiago Bernabeu in the UEFA Champions League’s first matchday. Inter must now respond after seeing their pressure go unrewarded, while Real Madrid can take confidence from the way they turned limited opportunities into two goals.
