Nigeria’s Falconets will meet England’s Young Lionesses in the last 16 of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup on Thursday, with a quarter-final place at stake at Stadion Miejski in Bielsko-Bia?a, Poland.
The match gives Moses Aduku’s team the chance to build on an emphatic finish to the group stage and continue their challenge for a deep run in the tournament.
Nigeria secured their knockout-stage place by beating New Caledonia 10-1 in their final Group F match. The victory took the Falconets to second in the section behind Spain, following a 2-0 defeat by the group winners and a goalless draw with China PR.
Their commanding win over New Caledonia was driven by a strong second-half performance. Winner Onajite David scored a hat-trick, while Ramotalahi Kareem was also on the scoresheet.
SL Benfica forward Janet Akekoromowei was among the Nigeria players to impress in the record-breaking victory and will again be one of the attacking options available to Aduku as his side attempt to reach the last eight.
England advanced from Group B after finishing third behind Brazil. The Young Lionesses began their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Canada before producing a 5-1 victory over Tanzania.
They ended the group stage with a 1-2 defeat by Brazil, but still moved through to the knockout phase. England finished above Canada on goals scored after the two teams ended level on points.
Both sides now need one win to reach the quarter-finals, setting up a potentially demanding encounter in Bielsko-Bia?a. Nigeria enter the match with the confidence of their 10-goal victory, while England will be seeking to respond after their narrow loss to Brazil.
The winner will face either hosts Poland or Colombia in the quarter-finals. That pathway gives Thursday’s meeting added importance, with Nigeria and England both attempting to move closer to the final stages of the competition.
