Poland have taken a 2-0 half-time lead over Argentina in the opening match of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup at Arena Katowice on Saturday, 5 September 2026.
The Polish side have made the most of their opportunities during the first 45 minutes, turning territorial control into a decisive advantage in Group A.
Oliwia Zwiazek put Poland ahead in the 26th minute, finishing an attack that reflected the hosts’ growing influence on the contest. The goal rewarded Poland for the pressure they had applied as they looked to establish control of the match.
Argentina’s situation worsened only four minutes later when Annika Paz turned the ball into her own net. The unfortunate own goal made it 2-0 to Poland in the 30th minute and left the Albiceleste facing a significant challenge before the interval.
The scoreline, however, does not fully reflect the balance of attempts. Argentina have registered 10 shots, compared with three from Poland, but their attacking play has lacked the necessary precision in the decisive moments.
That failure to convert their opportunities has left Argentina behind despite creating more attempts than their opponents. Poland, by contrast, have shown considerable efficiency, scoring twice from their limited number of efforts.
Poland’s goalkeeper and defence will now be required to maintain the same discipline after the break if the side are to secure a crucial opening victory in Group A. Argentina must improve their finishing in the second half if they are to alter the course of the match after conceding twice in a four-minute spell.
For now, Poland are in a strong position at Arena Katowice. Zwiazek’s opener gave them the lead, while Paz’s own goal provided a second advantage soon afterwards. Argentina’s greater shot count has yet to bring a reward, with the Polish defence protecting a two-goal cushion at half-time.
