Newcastle United have signed Guinea midfielder Ousmane Diabate, an 18-year-old prospect who has been compared with France great N’Golo Kante.
The Premier League club announced on Friday that it had recruited the highly rated international from Genclerbirligi for a reported €2.5m fee. Diabate will remain with the Turkish club on loan until the end of the season to continue his development.
The move completes a remarkable rise for Diabate, who was still playing for his boyhood club, Academie SOAR, in Guinea until the middle of December. After being discovered by Genclerbirligi, he needed only eight months to make a strong impression in Turkey and attract Newcastle’s interest.
The teenager was also being monitored by Tottenham, Aston Villa, Brighton and Brentford before Newcastle won the race for his signature. Diabate has explained the reasons behind his decision to join the Magpies, although the details of that explanation were not included in the announcement.
Newcastle sporting director Ross Wilson expressed his satisfaction at securing a player regarded as having significant potential.
Diabate has already represented Guinea at senior level. He made his international debut on 4 June in a friendly against Northern Ireland, coming off the bench to play the final 12 minutes in a 1-0 defeat. That appearance is currently his only cap for the Syli National.
His style has prompted comparisons with N’Golo Kante, particularly because of his ability to operate either as a box-to-box midfielder or in a deeper holding role. He is noted for his high work rate, his ability to win back possession repeatedly and his strength in individual duels.
Diabate is also regarded as a composed passer who can help launch counter-attacks, while his football intelligence is considered to be above average. Those qualities have helped fuel the belief that he could develop into a high-level midfielder.
For Newcastle, the signing represents an investment in the future as the club continues to add young players with the potential to develop into first-team options. Diabate’s immediate return to Genclerbirligi on loan means he will have further opportunity to gain experience before joining up with Newcastle on a permanent basis.
His arrival follows an exceptionally swift progression from Guinea’s Academie SOAR to senior international football and then to one of England’s leading clubs. The €2.5m agreement gives Newcastle control of a player whose reputation grew substantially during his short spell in Turkey, while the loan arrangement allows him to continue his education on the pitch.
Diabate’s first appearance for Guinea came less than a year after his emergence in Turkey, and his next stage will be focused on building consistency and experience before beginning life at Newcastle.
