Chelsea’s first major Premier League test under Xabi Alonso exposed a problem that their £349m summer rebuild has not addressed, as Arsenal recovered from an early setback to win 2-1 at Emirates Stadium.
The Blues arrived in north London needing to demonstrate that their heavy spending had turned them into genuine title contenders. Instead, despite possessing enough attacking quality to trouble the reigning champions, Chelsea were undone by a lack of midfield depth and defensive organisation.
The defeat was not simply another loss to Arsenal. It raised a more significant question over whether Chelsea’s extensive recruitment programme has solved the weaknesses that needed the most urgent attention.
Spending has not solved every problem
Chelsea invested £349m in 11 players during the summer transfer window, adding considerable attacking talent to Alonso’s squad. Morgan Rogers, Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro have already shown their ability to score goals, giving the club plenty of potential in the final third.
However, the match at Emirates Stadium suggested that the most expensive squad on the pitch can still be vulnerable in one of football’s most important areas.
Chelsea finished 10th last season, 33 points behind Arsenal. Alonso described the current transfer window as “phase one” of the club’s rebuild, but this first major examination delivered a warning the manager cannot afford to overlook.
Chelsea have goals, emerging young stars and ambition. Yet if Moises Caicedo’s injury keeps him out for an extended period, the midfield could become the weakness that undermines the rest of the project.
Rogers gives Chelsea perfect start
Chelsea made the ideal beginning when they took the lead after only two minutes.
Arsenal failed to clear a free-kick delivered by Reece James, allowing £117m summer signing Morgan Rogers to react first. He struck a volley beyond David Raya to give the visitors an early advantage.
The goal was also the first Arsenal had conceded this season.
Chelsea, though, were unable to turn that fast start into sustained control. Alonso’s side had already gone 18 Premier League matches without keeping a clean sheet, and they were soon required to withstand long periods of pressure.
Emiliano Martinez kept out an effort from Bukayo Saka, while Jorrel Hato and Wesley Fofana made important blocks as Arsenal continued to push for an equaliser.
Arsenal got back on level terms in the 25th minute. Former Chelsea forward Kai Havertz beat Martinez at his near post with a precise finish, shifting the momentum towards the home side.
Chelsea continued to pose a threat of their own. Reece James tested Raya with a long-range attempt, while Pedro Neto came close to restoring the visitors’ lead after a brilliant individual run ended with a shot against the post.
But Arsenal had the decisive final say, completing their recovery with a 2-1 victory and leaving Alonso with a clear problem to address in midfield and defence.
