Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique says he hopes to remain with the French club for a long time, but accepts that any contract extension must be deserved.
“I hope to stay at PSG for a long time, but that needs to be earned,” Luis Enrique said as he addressed the possibility of extending his agreement with the Parisian side.
His comments came after PSG suffered a 2-1 home defeat by Monaco in the third round of the French championship. The result leaves Luis Enrique’s team 12th in the table with only two points from the opening three matches.
Monaco, meanwhile, moved to the top of the standings after collecting nine points. Their victory in Paris further widened the gap between the two clubs at this early stage of the campaign.
For PSG, the defeat means their start to the league season has produced two points and placed the club in the lower half of the table. Luis Enrique’s remarks about his future therefore come as the side prepares to turn its attention to European competition.
PSG’s next match is scheduled for 9 September, when they will face Slovan in the opening round of the Champions League. The match is due to begin at 22:00 Moscow time.
The fixture will provide PSG with an immediate opportunity to respond after the loss to Monaco, although the club’s current league position remains the main domestic concern. Monaco’s nine-point haul puts them at the summit, while PSG are currently 12th after the first three rounds.
Luis Enrique’s statement does not confirm that a contract extension is imminent. Instead, it sets out his desire to continue working with PSG while acknowledging that his position must be justified through results and performances.
The Spanish manager’s future has consequently been linked to the team’s progress, with the defeat by Monaco leaving PSG with a modest return from their opening league fixtures. The club will now begin its Champions League campaign against Slovan before continuing its French championship schedule.
For the moment, Luis Enrique remains focused on PSG, but his message was clear: a long stay in Paris is an ambition rather than an entitlement. Any decision to prolong his time at the club, he indicated, will have to be earned.
