Ademola Lookman scored shortly after coming on as Atletico Madrid beat Manchester United 2-0 in the UEFA Champions League at the Metropolitano Stadium.
The Nigeria international replaced Julian Alvarez in the 71st minute before completing Atletico’s win eight minutes later with a simple finish.
The result was secured after a dominant display from Diego Simeone’s side, who took the lead inside the opening minute. Pablo Barrios converted Alex Baena’s assist to put the Spanish side ahead almost immediately.
Atletico continued to control the match, although they were denied a second goal before half-time when Johnny Cardoso’s effort was ruled out for offside.
Manchester United’s task became more difficult in the 74th minute as Leny Yoro was sent off, reducing the Premier League side to 10 players.
Lookman then took advantage of the extra space to put the result beyond doubt and complete an important victory for Atletico Madrid.
Speaking to CBS Sports Golazo after the match, Lookman praised his team-mates for the quality of their performance before his arrival and said the win would provide confidence for the next fixture.
“We know how big of a win that is for us,” Lookman said.
“The guys put on a big performance before I come on, so it’s easy to come into the team and play.
“I tried to help the team defensively and offensively when I get the energy. It’s a big win for us; it gives us confidence going into the next game. Game after game, we have to be ready.”
The victory gives Atletico Madrid a strong result to build on in the Champions League, with the club now preparing for their next match in the competition.
Simeone’s side are scheduled to visit Bundesliga club VfB Stuttgart on Tuesday, October 20.
