Former England footballer Ian Wright has called for Manchester City to receive a severe punishment after an independent commission found the club guilty of widespread financial violations between 2009 and 2018.
Wright described the situation as “awful” and urged the authorities to take firm action against the club, also known as the “Citizens”.
The commission found that Manchester City had, among other breaches, entered into fictitious contracts and distorted financial figures in order to conceal the true state of the club’s affairs.
Manchester City intends to appeal against the commission’s findings.
