The advantage enjoyed by home sides in Europe’s 10 strongest leagues has steadily diminished over the past 30 years, according to research by Balance of Play.
Between the 1996/97 and 2000/01 seasons, teams collected 57.7% of all available points when playing at home. Over the past five seasons, that figure has fallen to 52.2%.
The study examined 97,358 matches across the 10 leagues. Home wins accounted for 49.84% of all results in the 2000/01 season, but that proportion had dropped to 43.12% by 2025/26.
There has been only a slight decrease in the number of draws during the same period. The share of away victories, however, increased from 24.71% to 31.1%.
The decline in home advantage has been most pronounced in Serie A, where it has weakened by 3.31% per decade.
Italian clubs have taken just 49.44% of the points available to them at home over the past five seasons, the lowest figure among the 10 leading championships.
