Guti backs Real Madrid to challenge Barcelona in first El Clasico

Real Madrid great Guti says Barcelona will not overwhelm his former club when the two sides meet in the first El Clasico of the season on October 25th.

The match will see Real Madrid travel north to Catalonia, with the fixture carrying added significance following Jose Mourinho’s return to the Estadio Bernabeu over the summer.

Mourinho is preparing to face Barcelona again, but his side have made a slower start to the campaign than the defending champions. Barcelona have won all eight of their LaLiga matches so far, while Real Madrid have recorded six victories.

Defeats by Real Betis and Atletico Madrid have left Mourinho’s team playing catch-up, although Guti believes the rivalry will bring out the best in Real Madrid.

The former Spain international, who played under Mourinho during the manager’s first spell in charge, also rejected the suggestion that Barcelona are unbeatable.

“Obviously, Barca are not going to thrash Real Madrid in El Clasico,” Guti said.

“This current Barca team are still missing a Champions League title, so let’s see if they can fight for it.

“So far this season, there has been no team that can match them. They’re a great team and have a composure that Real Madrid currently lack.

“They bring in players from abroad who, if they play well and win, seem better than they actually are. Real Madrid are a team with a great sense of unity, and even if they lose three games, they’ll continue the same.”

Barcelona’s perfect league record has made them the early pace-setters, while Real Madrid’s two defeats have increased the importance of their meeting.

However, Guti believes Real Madrid’s unity will remain a strength regardless of their results and is confident the club can produce a much stronger performance against their rivals.

The fixture will be Mourinho’s latest challenge since returning to the Estadio Bernabeu and will pit his Real Madrid side against a Barcelona team yet to be beaten in LaLiga this season.
