At the age of 30, Cote d’Ivoire international Ghislain Konan is set to experience English football for the first time after joining Wolverhampton on a one-season contract. The left-back was a free agent following his departure from Gil Vicente and arrives at a club preparing for life in the Championship after relegation.
Konan’s move represents an unexpected new chapter for a player who has remained a regular with Cote d’Ivoire despite spending much of his club career at sides with less international profile than several of his national-team colleagues. His switch to Wolverhampton gives him the chance to take on one of the most demanding challenges of his career.
A key factor in the move was the presence of Cesar Peixoto in the Wolverhampton dugout. The Portuguese coach worked with Konan at Gil Vicente last season, when the Ivorian operated on the left side of the defence.
«Je suis ravi car Ghislain est un bon joueur et un international experimente. Nous avons eu de la chance de l’avoir a Gil Vicente, et je pense qu’il a les qualites pour jouer a ce niveau», a explique Peixoto apres son arrivee.
Peixoto’s support represents a significant vote of confidence for the former Stade de Reims defender. Konan now joins a manager who already knows his qualities and believes he can perform at Championship level.
His career has taken a distinctive path since he left Stade de Reims. Konan spent two seasons in Saudi Arabia before making a short-lived move to Spain’s second tier. He subsequently rebuilt his career in Portugal with Gil Vicente.
Despite those changes, he retained an important place in the Cote d’Ivoire squad and remained the first-choice left-back under Emerse Fae. His move to Wolverhampton therefore provides a fresh test, even though the club will compete in the Championship rather than the Premier League this season.
The timing could also prove significant internationally, with Herve Renard’s first squad announcement for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign approaching. Konan’s immediate priority will be to establish himself at Wolverhampton, secure regular playing time and show that he can continue to play a leading role for the Elephants.
Competition for the position is expected to be strong. His rivals include Christopher Operi, who plays for Istanbul Basaksehir, and Hassane Kamara of Udinese. The young Christ Tape is also part of the picture after making a promising start to the season with Toulouse in the top flight.
Wolverhampton are aiming to return to the Premier League as quickly as possible, making regular selection far from guaranteed during a long Championship campaign. Konan will have to adapt quickly to his new surroundings and make the most of the opportunity created by his reunion with Peixoto.
