Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has become the oldest player to register a goal or assist in each of his first four La Liga appearances for the same club, after a superb start to the season with Deportivo.
The Gabonese forward, aged 37 years and 79 days, has scored four goals and supplied two assists across Deportivo’s opening four league matches. He has found the net in every one of those games.
Aubameyang added two assists in Saturday’s match against Villarreal, extending his remarkable run and helping him surpass a record previously held by Fernando Morientes.
The Opta statistic means Aubameyang is now the oldest player to record a goal involvement in each of his first four matches for one club in La Liga. A goal involvement covers either scoring or setting up a team-mate.
Morientes had set the previous benchmark while playing for Valencia in 2006. He had registered goal involvements in his first four La Liga matches for the club at the age of 30 years and 193 days.
Aubameyang’s achievement therefore eclipses Morientes’ mark by a significant margin, with the Deportivo forward reaching the milestone almost seven years later in his career.
His contribution has been consistent throughout the opening four rounds of the campaign. Aubameyang has scored in every league fixture, while his two assists against Villarreal took his total number of goal involvements to six.
The run has given the veteran striker a decisive role in Deportivo’s early-season performances. Although the record relates specifically to his first four matches for the club, it also underlines the immediate effect he has had since joining the team.
For Morientes, the sequence with Valencia in 2006 had stood as the benchmark for the oldest player to begin a La Liga spell with a goal involvement in each of his first four appearances. Aubameyang’s start has now moved that record into a new age bracket.
Opta’s figures also highlight the unusual nature of the achievement: Aubameyang has combined regular scoring with creative contributions, rather than relying solely on goals. His four strikes and two assists have all come during the same four-match league run.
The record was confirmed after the Villarreal fixture, when Aubameyang produced both of his assists in the match. His scoring sequence remained intact across the opening four rounds, ensuring he had contributed directly to a goal in every league appearance for Deportivo so far.
At 37 years and 79 days, Aubameyang has rewritten a record that Morientes had held since his opening matches for Valencia in 2006. His start to life at Deportivo has consequently become one of the standout statistical stories of the opening La Liga rounds.
