Former Kwara United coach Samson Unuanel says there is no reason to fear for Enyimba despite their difficult start to the Nigeria Premier Football League season.
The People’s Elephant have lost both of their opening matches, falling to a 2–1 defeat by Niger Tornadoes before losing 2–0 to Doma United. They have scored only once and are currently 18th in the league table.
That position is unusual for the multi-time champions, but Unuanel believes it is too early to draw conclusions about their campaign.
“I really don’t think we should start reading meaning to Enyimba’s position in the NPFL despite the fact that they sit 18th position on the log,” he told Completesports.com.
“The season is still early and I sincerely believe the Aba Elephants will not be fighting relegation because they have the players to turn their season around.”
Unuanel said the club’s immediate priority should be securing a first victory, which he believes could quickly improve confidence within the squad and alter the direction of their season.
“Enyimba only need to win one game to help push the morale of the players and move far from where they are at the moment,” he added.
The former coach’s comments come as Enyimba seek to recover from a disappointing opening fortnight. Their two defeats have left them without a point, while the team’s limited attacking return has added to concerns about their early league position.
However, Unuanel remains confident that the quality available to the club, combined with its strong championship record, will help produce an improvement as the season progresses.
The technical crew and former Enyimba figures are both expecting the Aba-based side to respond positively rather than become involved in a fight to remain in the division.
