David Alaba is being considered by Lazio as the Italian club look to strengthen their defence following Alessio Romagnoli’s move to Al-Sadd.
The 34-year-old Austria defender is a free agent after leaving Real Madrid and has attracted the interest of Lazio, according to Il Messaggero. However, there have been no specific negotiations between the player and the club at this stage.
Alaba’s name is understood to be one of several options Lazio could examine in the coming weeks as they continue to assess the market for available defenders. Diogo Leite is also reported to be on the club’s list of possible reinforcements.
Lazio sporting director Angelo Fabiani previously confirmed that the club would continue monitoring free agents even after the transfer window had closed. That policy has left the door open to further additions, with Alaba now among the players under consideration.
The Austrian defender ended his five-year spell at Real Madrid after the conclusion of his time with the Spanish club. During his career there, he won the Champions League twice.
Before joining Real Madrid, Alaba enjoyed a highly successful period with Bayern Munich. He won 10 league titles with the German club and lifted the Champions League trophy on two occasions.
His most recent seasons have, however, been affected by serious injuries. Those fitness problems have overshadowed the latter part of his career, although he remains a player Lazio could consider as they look for defensive options following Romagnoli’s departure.
At present, Alaba is only a potential target rather than the subject of an active transfer process. Lazio have not opened concrete talks with him, and the club’s interest remains at the stage of internal consideration.
The situation could develop in the coming weeks as Lazio continue to review free-agent possibilities. Alaba and Leite are among the names linked with the defensive search, but there is no indication yet that the Italian club have selected one preferred candidate.
