CHELSEA face competition for Abdul Baba Rahman as Italian side Roma have taken the lead in the race to sign the Ghana star from German side Augsburg.

The promising Augsburg left-back, 21, has been identified by manager Jose Mourinho as replacement for Filipe Luis, is wants to return to Atletico Madrid after 12 months at Stamford Bridge.

But according to The Mirror, Serie A Roma have offered Augsburg £11m to sign Rahman, who they are willing to offer a five-year deal.

Another challenge for Mourinho is the fact that the Ghana international is friends with Christian Atsu, who is yet to make an appearance for Chelsea's first team despite joining them two years ago.

Luis is unhappy in London after failing to dislodge Cesar Azpilicueta as Chelsea's first-choice left-back.

He arrived at Chelsea as a replacement for Ashley Cole - incidentally now with Roma - last summer.

Roma are also said to want Chelsea winger Juan Cuadrado who, like Luis, has rarely featured, despite his £27m transfer fee.

The Colombia international is also admired by Inter Milan and Serie A champions Juventus, but his agent Alessandro Lucci told Tuttomercatoweb.com: "Cuadrado is a Chelsea player, who Mourinho strongly wanted just over five months ago and the coach truly believes in him."
