Suat Serdar, a new recruit for Hertha Berlin, scored his first brace of the season on Sunday, lifting his team off the bottom of the Bundesliga table with their first points of the season following a 3-1 win against Bochum.
The 24-year-old German midfielder, who was bought for roughly eight million euros ($9.5 million) from relegated Schalke, scored his first goal for Hertha on 37 minutes and then responded quickly to a defensive blunder shortly before halftime.
Bochum equalized early in the second half when Simon Zoller scored for the hosts, but Hertha's ex-Nice attacker Myziane Maolida, 22, came on to score on his Bundesliga debut to put the game out of reach.
Hertha coach Pal Dardai praised his team for grinding out the result:
"The first half was a battle, we wanted to counter. It didn't look pretty," said Dardai, "but if anyone thinks we can play lovely football here, they don't know the Bundesliga.
"That's why I'm proud of the team. The result is nice, we were effective."
