Bournemouth 0-0 Tottenham: Stubborn Cherries Thwart Spurs in Feisty Stalemate at the Vitality

Published on: 21 October 2016

"?Tottenham were denied the chance to apply early pressure to their title rivals after a disappointing 0-0 draw at the Vitality Stadium in Saturday's lunchtime kick off.

A mixture of dogged Bournemouth defending and poor play in the final third of the pitch left Pochettino's men to rue their third consecutive draw, which meant they wasted the chance to go top of the table, for a little while at least.

Bournemouth were hit by two late injuries, with both Junior Stanislas and Andrew Surman ruled out, which meant Joshua King and Dan Gosling were brought into the midfield.

For Spurs, Danny Rose passed a late fitness test as Mauricio Pochettino reverted back to the tried and tested 4-5-1 formation, with Son Heung-min chosen as the main striker ahead of Vincent Janssen. Eric Dier continued at centre back in Toby Alderweireld's absence.

The opening exchanges were fairly even as both teams played with great intensity and a high press. Hugo Lloris made a brilliant close range save to deny Cherries' defender Charlie Daniels, using his legs to divert the centre back's shot onto the crossbar.

Tottenham also hit the woodwork in the first 20 minutes as Erik Lamela's speculative long range effort cannoned off Artur Boruc's crossbar.

The Polish keeper then made a smart save from Christian Eriksen's deflected effort on the half hour mark as the away side started to gain some control of the game.

Bournemouth still offered a threat on the counter, however and may have felt aggrieved that Lamela wasn't shown a second yellow card for a foul on Harry Arter. The first half closed out with Callum Wilson flicking a header wide of Lloris' goal as neither side could create that moment of quality to break the deadlock.

Tottenham came out with more purpose after the interval as Dele Alli saw his effort from range easily saved, whilst Lamela blazed over from a tight angle. With the pressure now increasing on the home side, they were resigned to defending in their own half without offering too much going forward.

Spurs meanwhile were struggling to make their possession count as they were unable to breakdown a resolute Cherries defence, who were showing real maturity against the only unbeaten side left in the Premier League.

Danny Rose saw his low shot saved by Boruc when he met substitute Moussa Sissoko's cross at the back post, as the clock ticked towards the closing stages.

The French midfielder was lucky not see red for a clear elbow on Harry Arter as Tottenham's frustrations grew at their inability to string together clear cut opportunities.

In fact it was Bournemouth who nearly broke the deadlock in the last few minutes when their own substitute Benik Afobe headed just over following Simon Francis' whipped cross into the box.

Both sides continued to huff-and-puff until the final whistle but their was little goalmouth action of note in stoppage time as Eddie Howe's men claimed their first Premier League point over Tottenham.
