"?Aston Villa have completed the signing of Icelandic midfielder Birkir Bjarnason from FC Basel for an undisclosed fee.

The 28-year-old Iceland international was unveiled by the club on "?Twitter, after completing a medical on Wednesday morning.

Bjarnason has featured for Swiss champions Basel in the Champions League this season and is seen as something of a coup for the Villans, who are currently 13th in the Championship table.

Bjarnason joined Basel in 2015 after playing in Italy with Sampdoria and Pescara, but rose to international prominence during Euro 2016, in which he scored twice (against Portugal and France). He also boasts the honour of scoring Iceland's first ever goal at a major tournament.

Steve Bruce's Villa have pushed hard to improve their squad this window, and the versatile midfielder is the club's third addition after James Bree and Henri Lansbury both joined earlier in the month.
