Antoine Griezmann Reveals Which England Legend Is His Idol and the 2 Things He Took From Him

Published on: 12 June 2016

"?Atletico Madrid and France forward Antoine Griezmann has revealed that his footballing idol is not anyone French, like former stars Zinedine Zidane or Thierry Henry, but former England captain David Beckham.

"I am an absolute fan," Griezmann told GQ France when asked about Beckham in a recent interview.

"On the field, he had already class, and off the field, he is always clean, well dressed and has perfect hair," the 25-year-old explained.

Recalling a particular memory about the latter point, Griezmann added, "I remember him at the London 2012 Olympic Games - he was on a boat and his hair did not move!"

Griezmann has even modelled his own look on the field after his idol.

"I'm really a fan. I play in long sleeves because he did too, I also took his number, 7," the player also revealed.

However, when it comes to Euro memories, it's not Beckham but a Frenchman who has Griezmann's heart. Specifically, David Trezeguet after his dramatic golden goal won Euro 2000 for Les Bleus - Griezmann was just nine-years-old at the time.

"It's the year 2000," he said. "The golden goal Trezeguet in the final against Italy. This is the last time we saw such a goal in this competition, it was crazy."

Unfortunately for Griezmann he couldn't make quite the same impact in France's eagerly awaited opening game against Romania on Friday night, despite coming off the back of a season in which he scored a career high 32 goals for Atletico.

He hit the post on one occasion in a disappointing individual performance at the Stade de France, later watching Dimitri Payet take the plaudits for a stunning winner. He'll have the chance to put things right when France face Albania on Wednesday.
