Alan Shearer Statue Set to Be Unveiled Outside St James' Park on Monday

Published on: 10 September 2016

Newcastle United legend "?Alan Shearer is set to be honoured by his former club, with a statue of the former England striker set to be unveiled outside St James' Park on Monday.

The statue was commissioned back in 2007 to celebrate the former Southampton and Blackburn striker's achievements with the Toon club, but was put on the back-burner after Mike Ashley bought the club. The project was funded by former Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd, who, "?according to the Daily Mail, reportedly felt it was his responsibility to fund the statue.

And while the statue is obviously a huge mark of respect towards Shearer, who is the Premier League's all-time record goalscorer with 260 goals, social media users couldn't help but think that the new statue looks a little suspect, with Shearer's Match of the Day colleague particularly vocal.

Love that they've gone for @alanshearer 's secret bondage look. https://t.co/LinslN1vyL

"?"?The statue certainly looks out of place all wrapped up, but just in case you wondering what it will look like once it's unveiled, here it is.

It's not yet known whether Mike Ashley will be a part of the guests present to celebrate Shearer's statue unveiling, with the Sports Direct owner currently in the middle of a crisis with his company, but Newcastle legend Kevin Keegan will be in attendance.
