Watford Striker Odion Ighalo Commits His Future to the Club With New 5-Year-Deal

Published on: 11 August 2016

"?Watford striker Odion Ighalo has committed his future to the club after putting pen to paper on a five-year-deal extension to his current contract up until 2021, according to the "?Guardian.

The Nigerian international has joined his attacking partner Troy Deeney in brushing aside any fears from the fans that he would be heading out of the club in this summer's transfer window after an immensely successful campaign last year, which saw a number of suitors announce their interest.

After scoring 17 goals in his debut season in the Premier League last year, big money offers were said to have been put towards representatives of both the player and Watford, including a staggering £38m offer from Chinese side Shanghai SIPG, who were looking to bring in the 27-year-old towards the end of June.

Watford owner Giampolo Pozzo insisted that the club would not sell the striker under any circumstances, and Ighalo turned down a potentially monumental rise in wages in Shanghai to stick with the Hornets for the next five years.

Despite already committing his future to the club until 2020 in his previous contract, the club have been wary of numerous teams looking to capture the former Udinese man, and were keen to add a one year extension as soon as possible, so as to not distract the player from his preparations for Watford's opening game coming up in two days time.

Watford will be welcoming Southampton to Vicarage Road, with new manager Walter Mazzarri keen to make a good start to the campaign, and will be relying on the form of both Deeney and Ighalo to have a similar impact on the side's impressive goal return last season.
