The FA released a statement saying, "It is alleged that on 20 February 2016, the Norwich City forward placed a bet on the result, progress, conduct or any other aspect of, or occurrence in, a football match or competition in breach of FA Rule E8."

Lafferty has until the 5th August to reply to the charge.

The rules are wide-ranging, with the FA saying they apply to "?all those involved in the game at Premier League, Football League, Football Conference and Women's Super League levels, as well as those at clubs in the the Northern, Southern and Isthmian league'.

Manchester City defender Martin Demichelis was also charged for breaking the same rule back in March. The Argentinian escaped a ban from playing, but was ordered to pay a fine of £22,000.

Lafferty was part of the Northern Ireland squad that made history during the European Championships in France, where he helped his side reach the final 16 of the tournament, only to be beaten 1-0 by Wales.

The striker has been out-of-favour at the Canaries, and was sent out on loan last season to Birmingham City, where he made six appearances scoring one goal.
