Marc Bartra Ready to Replace Mats Hummels at Borussia Dortmund

Published on: 04 August 2016

"?Borussia Dortmund centre back Marc Bartra believes he can step up to the mark and replace former fan favourite Mats Hummels.

Bartra left Barcelona this summer ending his 14-year association with the club, swapping Spain for Germany after joining Thomas Tuchel's side for €8 million.

Meanwhile Hummels jumped ship from Dortmund to Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, giving Bartra a hard task to try and replace the German international.

The 25-year-old has been in and out of the Barca team since making his breakthrough in 2010 and speaking to the media in Switzerland in the middle of Dortmund's pre-season tour, Bartra is happy to have left his native country behind.

"I was very excited about Dortmund's interest in me," he said according to "?ESPN. "It was a big change for me, but I accept the challenge and I see myself equal to the task.

Speaking about the difficulty of stepping into the shoes of Hummels, the Spain international said of the former Dortmund captain: "I know Mats, being his successor is a challenge.

"But I also like possession football and building up the play from the back."

Bartra made just 59 league appearances in seven seasons at Camp Nou failing to establish himself in the club's first team plans.

And he's hoping that a move away will bring with it a regular run of football and the opportunity to impress.

"It was a tough battle for the starting positions at Barcelona," he said. "Pique and Mascherano were set, they belong to the best on their position.

"We also have good players in this position at Dortmund, and it will be a fight for game time.

"BVB are a top club, I want to gain the trust and claim my place in the team."
