Kano Pillars put dent on Rivers United title chances

Published on: 27 April 2025

Rivers United's hopes of winning the Nigeria Premier Football League title looked almost dashed following their loss to Kano Pillars on match day 35 on Friday, NigeriaSoccernet.com reports.

The Pride of Rivers faltered 2-0 at the Sani Abacha Stadium against the Sai Masu Gida after goals by Rabiu Ali and Ahmed Musa.

After an end-to-end encounter, the first 45 minutes of action culminated in a goalless affair.

All seemed to be going to plan for the visitors as the scoreline remained unchanged after the hour mark, but 4 minutes later, Pillars broke the deadlock.

It was Ahmed Musa who gave the hosts the lead after connecting well with a pass from Zulkifilu Muhammad.

Veteran midfielder and Captain of the side saw his shot handled in the box by  Stephen Manyo for a penalty.  He stepped up and scored his 12th goal of the season to make it 2-0.

Kano Pillars remained resolute for the win on the day.

Remo Stars now need an outright win versus Niger Tornadoes this Sunday to claim their first NPFL title after Rivers Utd stumbled in Kano.
