Jetro Willems Not Among Liverpool Targets as Reds Look to Strengthen at Left-Back

Published on: 26 July 2016

"?PSV Eindhoven defender Jetro Willems is not thought to be on Liverpool's radar as they look to strengthen at left-back this summer, despite earlier reports suggesting that the Dutchman could replace Ben Chilwell in Jurgen Klopp's sights.

"?ESPN FC claim that the club have informed Willems' representatives that they won't be pursuing a move for him in the transfer market this summer, choosing to direct their resources in a different direction as they look to provide a challenger for Alberto Moreno's place.

Willems is expected to be on the move this summer one way or another, with just a single season left on his contract at the Philips Stadion. PSV are thought to prefer the idea of picking up some cash for him during the current transfer window to that of letting him leave for nothing in a year's time, but they first need to find a buyer.

Brad Smith's impending move to Bournemouth will leave the Reds desperately short in a position where they already lack both quality and depth, sliding the left-back slot to the very top of Klopp's list of areas to beef up.

In addition to the recent capture of Georginio Wijnaldum, the club have already signed Joel Matip, Sadio Mane, Alex Manninger, Ragnar Klavan and Loris Karius as they look to set up a top four challenge for next season - while remaining an outside shout for a first Premier League title in over 25 years.
