Hans-Joachim Watzke: Thomas Tuchel Will Bring Mario Gotze Back to the Top

Published on: 22 July 2016

"?Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke believes manager Thomas Tuchel will help elevate Mario Gotze to the top again after the German re-signed for the club from rivals Bayern Munich in a £20m deal.

Gotze left the Westfalenstadion in 2013 for the Allianz Arena but failed to tie down a regular spot in Bayern Munich's starting XI. The 24-year-old was then made aware by new Bayern boss Carlo Ancelotti that he could not offer him any guarantees.

The Germany international had been linked with a move to Liverpool and a reunion with former manager Jurgen Klopp, but it is Dortmund who have captured the signature of the World Cup winner and Watzke believes the club's new No.10 can finally fulfil his potential.

"We are convinced that our coach will bring back Mario back to the top level he had with us," Watzke told Bild and as quoted on "?Goal.

"In Munich, Mario started thinking too much while playing soccer. He's certainly lost a little self-confidence."

One person who is not too impressed with Gotze's transfer back to Dortmund is former Bayern and Liverpool defender Didi Hamann.

Hamann has suggested that Gotze took the path of "less resistance" by returning to Dortmund, but Watzke has refuted those claims.

"Mario has certainly not taken the path of least resistance. On the contrary. His decision to return is a courageous one," the Dortmund CEO said.

Along with Gotze, the 2015/16 Bundesliga runner-ups have also added Andre Schurrle to their squad after the forward's transfer from Wolfsburg was confirmed on Friday.
