Crystal Palace Complete £10m Signing of West Ham Centre-Back James Tomkins

Published on: 05 July 2016

"?Crystal Palace have completed their third major signing of the summer in the shape of 27-year-old centre-back James Tomkins, who follows England winger Andros Townsend and French goalkeeper Steve Mandanda through the door.

Tomkins has signed a long-term five-year contract that will keep him at Selhurst Park until 2021 after the two clubs settled on a £10m fee for the Basildon native.

A deal has been expected since weekend when the player remained behind while his Hammers team-mates flew out to Seattle for a pre-season tour of the United States.

"I am really excited to be joining Crystal Palace, a massive club and a manager in Alan Pardew that I know well and will always be thankful for how he helped me develop in my younger days at Upton Park," the player told CPFC.co.uk.

Eagles chairman Steve Parish added, "I'm really pleased James has agreed to join us. He's someone Alan has always wanted to sign from his own days at West Ham. I'm sure he is destined to become a huge part of our team as we look to build on the progress the club has made over the last six years.

"It's been a really positive transfer window so far, everyone has worked really hard to make these deals happen and I think we are much stronger because of them."

A West Ham statement thanked Tomkins for his long service to the club:

"In total, across nine seasons in the first team, Tomkins made a total of 243 appearances, scoring 11 goals. West Ham United would like to thank James for his hard work and commitment during his time at the club and wish him all the best in his future career."
