Barcelona Defender Thomas Vermaelen Set for Roma Medical

"?Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen looks set to sign for Roma after the Catalan club gave him permission to have a medical with the Serie A outfit.

The Belgium defender signed for Barcelona in 2014 for £15m, but has been plagued by injuries since then, restricting him to just seven La Liga appearances.

Barcelona said in a Tweet: "With the Club's permission, Thomas Vermaelen has travelled to Rome to undergo a medical with AS Roma."

Roma manager Luciano Spalletti had previously confirmed that the club's sporting director Walter Sabatini had been in negotiations with Barcelona over bringing the 30-year-old to the Stadio Olimpico.

"Walter is working on this deal, although for now we cannot say that it is done," he told Sky Sport.

"Vermaelen is a player with experience and quality. He can build the play from the back and has great character. These players are used to playing important European matches."

With Vermaelen's arrival imminent and Roma also signing Tottenham Hotspur defender Federico Fazio, Greece international Kostas Manolas looks set to leave the club.

Earlier this summer, the player's agent claimed Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea had all expressed interest in signing Manolas, who moved to the Italian capital in 2014, impressing in his first two seasons at the club.

"The best clubs in Europe want him," Ioannis Evangelopoulos told Italian newspaper Il Tempo

"There isn't just Manchester City, but also United and Chelsea.

"I haven't spoken with Roma for a while. Will he remain in the capital? No comment."

With Vermaelen coming in, Manolas certainly looks like he could be commanding a move to one of the top European heavyweights.
