Atletico Madrid President Confirms Interest In Bringing Diego Costa Back To The Club

Published on: 15 July 2016

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has confirmed he harbours ambitions of bringing Diego Costa back to the club.

The controversial striker left the Vicente Calderon in 2014 for Chelsea, signing in a £32 million deal but rumours have persisted that Costa is unhappy at Stamford Bridge, fuelling speculation that he would return to the Spanish capital - and "?Cerezo's comments after the announcement of next season's La Liga fixtures will only serve to fuel speculation.

Costa enjoyed a brilliant first season in the Premier League, adapting seamlessly as the Blues clinched a league and League Cup double under Jose Mourinho, but a loss of form, injury problems and suspensions have left Costa feeling indifferent towards life in England.

Cerezo has now admitted that Atletico are looking to re-sign the striker, who spearheaded Diego Simeone's attacking unit to a La Liga and the Copa del Rey triumph, while also reaching the Champions League final.

"We're looking for a new striker, and we always like to get the biggest players we can. Costa played for us for a few years and he's a really good player, no one can deny that. I don't know if Costa has spoken to Conte, but we're working to hard bring the best players to Atleti."

Back in April, reports suggested Costa was determined to stay at Stamford Bridge and fight for his place under new boss Antonio Conte, with The Guardian stating that the club would rebuff offers for the striker after positive talks between the player and manager, with the former assured that he had a major role to play in the new boss' plans.
