Antonio Conte Wants to Bring His Former Defensive Rock Giorgio Chiellini to Chelsea

Published on: 21 August 2016

First he was interested in former club Juventus' Leonardo Bonucci; now - according to "?The Sun - it seems Chelsea boss Antonio Conte is after Bonucci's defensive partner Giorgio Chiellini. Earlier this summer, both Manchester City and Chelsea were reported to be interested in Bonucci, but both were rebuffed.

With Conte very vocal in his pursuit of a new defender, it appears he's targeting a former player once again, one he also managed in this summer's European Championships as Italy reached the quarter-finals.

The proposed deal is mooted to be worth in the region of £25m (around €28.9m) - a lot of money at the best of times, it's even more staggering considering that the player turned 32 this month.

Still, any deal seems unlikely; Juventus don't need to sell and Chiellini has been at the club for years (since 2005). Having never shown any inclination of leaving, he's under contract until June 2018 and is currently in negotiations for a renewal.

It's been a relatively quiet transfer window for the Blues so far, partly because they did their business early.

Conte will certainly be hoping a new defender comes in before the deadline on August 31. His club have been strongly linked with Napoli man Kalidou Koulibaly but he's said to be ready to sign a new contract and reject any proposed advances from other clubs.

As for any outgoings, Cesc Fabregas is a name that's been mentioned, but after his incredible assist for Diego Costa's winner on Saturday, there have been calls from the fans for the Spaniard to stay.
