Anthony Martial Praises Former Manchester United Boss Louis van Gaal

Louis van Gaal may not have been the most inspiring or popular of Manchester United managers, but Anthony Martial will always have fond memories of the Dutchman, who was instrumental in helping the Frenchman adapt to the Premier League.

The 20-year-old joined United from Monaco last summer and was extremely impressive during his debut campaign, regularly injecting excitement and pace into the United attack.

Martial scored 11 goals in 31 appearances for the Red Devils last season and has pinpointed Van Gaal's influence as a key aspect in his development.

"I had a great relationship with Van Gaal," Martial told L'Equipe. "He always demanded perfection from me. He has done a lot for me.

"He always showed me videos together with his assistant, even when I had scored a double. He pointed out the things I had done wrong.

"Sometimes it was annoying because you expected to be shown the things you did well, but I knew it was for my own good."

After failing to qualify for the Champions League, van Gaal was sacked and replaced by Jose Mourinho and Martial is hoping the Portuguese coach will help him in a similar manner.

"Mourinho is a great coach," he added. "He has won a lot of titles.

"I do not really know him personally yet, but I know how much he has won. I know that Mourinho has worked with great players and he helped them improve and develop."
