Zamalek Earn N2.2m For Beating Enyimba

Zamalek of Egypt, at the Adokiye Amasiemaka Stadium in Port Harcourt on Sunday, defeated their host, Enyimba of Aba, 1-0 in a CAF Champions League Group B encounter. Bassin Morsi’s header from a cross in the 8th minute beat Enyimba goalkeeper, Theophilus Afelokhai, to give the Egyptians the lead. The goal stood and finally decided the game. Enyimba struggled in the water-logged pitch to level the score to no avail, as Zamalek players waved off all threats. But what can be called Enyimba’s best chance came in the 42nd minute when Joseph Osadiaye fluffed a very good opportunity. The striker was found unmarked inside Zamalek’s vital area only for him to blaze over the bar, which drew noise from the small crowd at the stadium. Another decent opportunity came at the dot of the first half when Ifeanyi Onuigbo was brought down at the edge of Zamalek’s 18-yard box but Mosquitoes’ effort was inches wide. In the 85th minute, Onuigbo had a decent opportunity to put Enyimba level after a fine control inside Zamalek’s box, but his volley was also well wide off the mark. The Peoples Elephants continue to push for an equalizer, making double changes in the process with Etor Daniel coming in for misfiring Mfon Udoh, while Stephen Chukwude came in for Onuigbo, but the Egyptians held on and win the match. Meanwhile, the five-time champions from North Africa have earned CAF’s N2.2 million ($11,000). For winning the match; the North Africans earned $10,000 and $1,000 for the win and the lone goal scored respectively. Enyimba will next confront ES Setif of Algeria in Algiers, a side that lost 0-2 to Sundowns of South Africa on Saturday. The two sides that played on Saturday complete Group B of this year’s CAF Champions League. Presently, Sundowns top the group on three points, followed by Zamalek (also on three points though with inferior goals difference), Enyimba and Setiff in that order.
