Wolfsburg Defender Ricardo Rodriguez Hints He'd Be Open to Arsenal Switch

Published on: 02 June 2016

"?Wolfsburg left back Ricardo Rodriguez has opened the door to a potential move to Arsenal after admitting it would be "exciting" to join up with Switzerland teammate Granit Xhaka.

Xhaka completed his long, protracted move to the Gunners from Borussia Monchengladbach for a fee in excess of £30m on a five-year deal.

And according to the "?Evening Standard, Arsenal would be very interested in adding the 23-year-old's colleague to their ranks, who share a room together on international duty, with Rodriguez' buyout clause thought to be around £19m.

Rodriguez has established himself as one of the Bundesliga's top full-backs for quite some time, with his attacking instincts matched with competent defensive displays.

The 23-year-old scored against Real Madrid in the Champions League, but following a disappointing eighth place finish, Wolfsburg have missed out on Europe altogether, opening the exit door for the 36-cap defender.

Speaking to Swiss newspaper Tagesanzeiger about the possibility of linking up with Xhaka at the Emirates Stadium, Rodriguez said: "That would be exciting, yes, especially because the room arrangement at Arsenal would be fixed as well."

He also said that to remain at Wolfsburg would be "not impossible but unrealistic", with a whole host of Champions League clubs no doubt interested in the former FC Zurich player's services.

Rodriguez's arrival at Arsenal could spell the end of Kieran Gibbs' time at the club, with the 26-year-old having played understudy to Nacho Monreal for most of this season.

With a lack of regular football costing him a place in England's 23-man squad for the European Championships, Gibbs is unlikely to stick around if Rodriguez comes in, but the Evening Standard says that he'll only depart if manager Arsene Wenger tells him he can leave.
